MASONRY / CITATION

Entry Name: Monarch Place 3, Papillion, Nebraska
Firm: Randy Brown Architects
Masonry Contractor: Thunn Construction, Inc.
Owner(s): Quantum Quality Real Estate
Photographer: Farshid Assassi

The question we asked ourselves at the beginning of the project was, “Can commercial retail buildings be inspiring?" The goals for the project were to catch people’s attention as they drive by; create a public outdoor space; organize tenant signage on the building.

The solution looked to the billboard as a conceptual starting point. The billboard presents the “commercial company name” to people in their cars. The billboard’s structural steel pieces, skin and lighting were incorporated into the building design.

This building type is replacing the barns which once stood on the site. We answered the question:  “Absolutely! Yes, commercial retail buildings can be inspiring!”

Jury Comments: The changing planes of masonry work artfully with the layers of metal frame and screens. Together they give great depth and texture to what traditionally might be a very 2-dimensional composition.
