This retreat for an urban developer integrates minimalist elements into a modest 1850’s farmhouse. The retreat presents an understated choreography of new and old. It expresses its deep respect for the humble old farmhouse without delving into nostalgia, reveling in the rural past, or fetishizing fixtures and finishes. The result is a comfortably stylish upgrade, assertively and unselfconsciously modern.
Jury Notes: The architects fearlessly remade this little house in an unconventional manner and the house appears to be better for it. The clean geometry of the attic level double dormer and the screen entry walls make this modestly scaled addition/renovation resonant.
