When a building goes unsupported, it becomes unnoticed. When a homeless prevention organization goes unsupported, it is those most in need who suffer. Using a door as a metaphor for opportunity, the concept of this design was to stitch together under-utilized materials. This demonstrates how the client pieces together resources to make a positive impact on the homeless community. Using selective accents of color, it brings happiness and warmth to the space and help motivate the less-fortunate to be proactive and strive for a better tomorrow. The space was designed to represent what the client does and the kind of impact they have created.

Jury Notes: A richness of thinking with modest means. The social mission of this homeless prevention organization is beautifully articulated in the artwork created with repurposed doors, where it has been stated by the architect that ‘the door is the metaphor for opportunity’. The notion of taking something ordinary and elevating its value is a leitmotif throughout this renovation and acts as a guide for how staff addresses this often-misunderstood segment of our communities.
