Schoonover Residence

Architect: Burket Graf, AIA

Designed by renowned Lincoln architect Burket E. Graf, AIA as a retirement home for Mr. & Mrs. Guy R. Hunt in 1951, this prairie style house features a large living room with a massive Colorado red quartzite fireplace on one side and wall to wall glass on the other, giving residents a view of the terraced yard and garden. An intimate dining room designed to hold no more than eight persons is located behind the fireplace and enjoys the same yard and garden view. The dining room wall opposite the fireplace is of translucent patterned glass that provides daylight for the stairwell and dramatic lighting for the dining room. High redwood ceilings and birch cabinetry are featured throughout the home and unique details and colors from the 1950’s can be found in the bathroom colors and finishes.

Located on a large corner lot in the exclusive Piedmont neighborhood, the home’s solid walls face the street to minimize sight and sound while glass walls and openings face the large rear yard and garden.

Purchased in 1995 by Terry and Pam Schoonover, the new owners fell in love with the openness of the living areas and the views of the yard. Since then, they have installed energy efficient glass in the exterior openings and upgraded the kitchen. They intend to maintain the integrity of the home as envisioned by Mr. Graf, who visited them several times over the years and provided insight into making the house their own.
