Dick Coyle, 85, founded Omaha architecture firm

Published Tuesday/ October 17, 2006 / BY JASON KUIPER-WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Richard "Dick" Coyle, a longtime Omaha architect and World War II veteran, died October 13 at age 85.

Coyle opened Richard W. Coyle Architects in 1965 and continued working there until his retirement 20 years later. In 1975 he was elected president of the Omaha section of the American Institute of Architects' Nebraska Chapter. In 1978 Coyle was elected president of Cosmopolitan International of Omaha Inc. He graduated in 1938 from Tech High School, where he was a swimmer. He attended Creighton University for a year before joining the Army Air Corps. On March 6, 1944, after flying about 15 missions, Coyle was shot down and captured by German troops. He spent the next 14 months as a prisoner of war, said his son James Coyle of Denver. After his discharge, he graduated from the University of Colorado. Coyle, a member of St. Joan of Arc Church, was a religious and humble man, said his wife, Bettye Coyle. "He had a wonderfully full life," she said. "He had an ability to adapt to the situation, being a prisoner of war, going back to school and having a family." Coyle is preceded in death by a son, Richard. Other survivors include sons Michael of Denver and Thomas of Castle Rock, Colo., and grandchildren. Services were held at St. Joan of Arc Church.

Information/Registration Available. The Restore Omaha Conference, Exhibition and Tour will be November 3, 4 and 5 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s campus and various sites around Omaha.

Now in its second year, Restore Omaha offers current and potential owners of older properties an opportunity to learn from local and regional craftsmen how to restore, revive and preserve their structure. In addition, architects, engineers, contractors, designers, planners, facilities managers, building owners and preservationists can learn about the resources, skills and knowledge necessary to preserve and maintain this area’s heritage. In 2005, 453 people attended Restore Omaha giving the event high marks.

This years keynote speaker is nationally-known preservation consultant Bob Yapp. With wit and wisdom, Yapp will speak on Turning Your Historic Neighborhoods Around motivating those in attendance to make older neighborhoods a diverse, friendly, rewarding and safe place to live. Following Yapp’s speech, 19 break-out sessions will teach attendees preservation and restoration techniques they can use on their own homes. The event also will feature an exhibitor area, a bookstore and a tool area for attendees to gather ideas, products, contacts and solutions for their older home needs.

On Sunday, extensive hands-on workshops led by talented trades people will run from 9 to 1 p.m. and from 1 to 5 p.m. a tour will highlight current and completed preservation efforts in Omaha’s historic neighborhoods of Joslyn Castle, Bemis Park and Gifford Park. The weekend will kick-off Friday November 3 with a meet and greet at Joslyn Castle. Restore Omaha is happy to partner with Friends of Joslyn Castle this year to produce the event. Money raised from Restore Omaha will help restore Joslyn Castle’s historic windows.

AIA Omaha is helping to sponsor the breakout sessions this year. Architects attending can earn Continuing Education Credits.
