AIA Omaha Update

This year Omaha will host the State AIA fall conference appropriately titled “Connection/Conversation/Creation” which I think begins to describe what we need to do as a community of architects as we begin to recuperate from the last two years.  Now is the time to bond with your colleagues, discuss what we are learning and implement our innovation.  So I am marking my calendar and plan on being at the Qwest Center October 14-15. Immediately following, on the 16th, AIA Omaha has partnered with TEDx Omaha www.tedxomaha.com to bring ideas to our city that are worth spreading (for those familiar with TED you know what that means).

We have continued to offer our vendor sponsored monthly membership meetings in an effort to not only provide additional CEU’s but to keep the AIA Omaha community informed of pertinent issues and events.  Additionally, we are always working close with other allied organizations like DaOMA, Joslyn Institute and USGBC Flat-water Chapter to maximize opportunities and events for our members.

James S. Polshek, FAIA was a lead designer for the Newseum Building Complex in Washington, D.C.

We are also excited to announce that James Polshek, FAIA with Ennead Architects (recent name change) will be speaking at our annual meeting on November 16th at the Holland Performing Arts Center.   Polshek has been described as “one of those great architects without a great ego”, and without having been to one of his talks, it seems fitting that he would be willing to remove his name for the sake of his partners.

To stay up to date with the latest information, I encourage you to visit our website at www.aiaomaha.org.  There you can find a lot of useful information with what AIA Omaha is doing and has planned for the months ahead.

AIA Omaha President

NCARB | IDP 2.0: Phase Three - Now Fall 2011

The third and final phase of IDP 2.0, which was originally scheduled for January 2011, will now be implemented in fall 2011. Interns will be notified of the implementation date at least six months in advance of the launch date.

The electronic Experience Verification Reporting (e-EVR) system was launched in 2008 to create a more efficient and user-friendly process for reporting IDP experience. As we look to the long-term improvement of the program, we also needed to look at the long-term expandability of our computer systems.

"In order to build a foundation for the next several years, we needed to adjust the implementation of the final phase of IDP 2.0 to accommodate the time it takes to create systems that can handle the current improvements to the program as well as future improvements," said Mary S. de Sousa, Vice President, Operations at NCARB.
For more information about the changes related to the final phase of IDP 2.0, download our guide IDP 2.0: Experience Areas and Categories, which includes definitions, explanations of the experiences areas that are combined or split, training hour rollover examples, and frequently asked questions.

Nebraska Ranked No. 6 Pro-Business State

Nebraska is the nation’s No. 6 pro-business state, according to the 2010 Pollina Corporate Real Estate survey unveiled earlier this week.  The Pollina survey is one of the nation’s most respected studies of job retention and creation by the 50 states.  This is Nebraska’s strongest showing yet in the annual survey.  Brent Pollina, author of the study, names Virginia as “America’s most pro-business state” followed closely by Utah, Wyoming, South Carolina, and North Carolina.  For the seventh consecutive year, California ranked dead last.  The Pollina study evaluates and ranks states based on 31 factors including taxes, human resources, right-to-work legislation, energy costs, infrastructure spending, workers compensation laws, economic incentive programs and state economic development efforts.
