Omaha Eco Town Square Concept

On Tuesday November 13th, 2007, at the AIA Omaha annual meeting, AIA Omaha president John Dineen,AIA gave a presentation on the Omaha Eco Town Square to the AIA Omaha membership . The Omaha Eco Town Square is a concept proposal for a regional design center in Omaha NE involving the National building industry. Its purpose is to advance the science of sustainability in Architecture. The Omaha Eco-Town Square will manage a series of activities and alliances, each aimed at advancing ecological literacy and the study of sustainability in our built environment as an integral part of the use, and practice of architecture. Furthermore working in collaboration with allied organizations to develop sustainable design education beyond the built environment, providing for the understanding of the relationship the built environment has to: the economy, public health, biology/ecology, land use planning and transportation, manufacturing and assembly of building components, and advancing the knowledge of climatic, geographical diversity and expertise in our mid-west region for the practice of design. The AIA Omaha chapter is attempting to provide leadership in the building industry to answer Architects questions such as: What are the building materials of the future? How will nanotechnology affect architecture? Will future building materials be able to think? How will greater use of alternative energy change design? What new tools do you need as a practicing Architect, sitting at your desk tomorrow morning? Look for information coming to you in the weeks ahead summarizing this exciting opportunity for our profession.

Reinvestment on Nebraska’s Main Streets Reaches New High

For every dollar spent to operate a local Main Street program in Nebraska during the 2006-2007 Fiscal Year, $35.40 was reinvested in the community. That 35-to-1 reinvestment ratio is included in the Nebraska Lied Main Street Program’s Annual Report released November 1, 2007.

“It pays to be a part of the Main Street Program,” said Nebraska Lied Main Street Director J.L. Schmidt. This reinvestment number takes into account the sum of the value of volunteer hours, building rehabilitation investment, new construction investment, public improvement investment, grants and in-kind contributions, combined public and private financial contributions, he said.  In Nebraska in the 2006-2007 fiscal year, local Main Street programs spent $272,893. The total reinvestment was $9,659,381.

Main Street volunteers logged 10,614 volunteer hours during the Fiscal Year, Schmidt said. Based on the $18.04 per hour at which the Independent Sector values volunteer time, that’s $190,943 reinvested in the community.

There were 35 net new businesses and 74 net new jobs during the reporting period. Nebraska Main Street communities saw 47 building rehabs worth $1,866,563 during 2006-2007. There were five new construction projects worth $4,545,759 and 16 public improvement projects worth $2,797,600.  Since the state program began in 1994, the net business gain has been 443 with 1,220 net new jobs. There have been 1,272 building and façade rehabs worth $25.8 million, 60 new construction projects worth more than $26 million and 140 public improvement projects worth $7.2 million dollars.

“There is still plenty to cheer about on Main Street,” Schmidt said. The annual report is
available.
